Pilot's first travel center opened in 1981, and travel centers have been the main thrust of its business ever since.

In 1988, Pilot began concentrating on expanding its Travel Center operations into a nationwide network. Also in 1988, the company opened its first travel center with a fast-food concept.

By 2001 Pilot was operating 65 convenience stores and 140 travel centers in 37 states. On September 1, 2001, Pilot Corporation and Marathon Ashland Petroleum (MAP) entered into an agreement to form Pilot Travel Centers (PTC). MAP is the sixth largest refiner of petroleum products in the country, and its sales are approximately $20 billion. In February 2003, PTC acquired Williams Travel Centers, bringing the company to its current size.

PEOPLE:
The career opportunities at Pilot Travel Centers are truly limitless. Whether you aspire to be a Unit Manager, a Multi-unit Manager, or to hold one of our many support level positions (marketing, training, staffing, etc.) we have the training and development programs to help you get there. Best of all, your advancement is based strictly on your performance, not your tenure.

Here are a few of the many success stories at Pilot! Your name could be next on the list...

Al Fitzpatrick: Al began his career at Pilot as a Travel Center Manager and after holding several positions, he is now the Operations Manager for the Finance Department at our Support Center located in Knoxville, TN. With 12 years of experience and knowledge, Al believes that Pilot offers unlimited growth and potential to its employees. Al states, "The experience you bring with you plus the development we have to offer equals no limit of where you can go."

Chuck Hall, Regional Manager: Chuck came on board with Pilot as a Travel Center Co-manager. With the help of a few mentors here at Pilot, he has reached one of his goals as becoming one of our Regional Managers in the South Central Division. Chuck feels that Pilot is a performance based company, and he sums it up by saying, "If you perform and do the right thing, the opportunities are right in front of you."

Asa Hazelwood, Director of Facility Revenue: Asa Hazelwood has worked in the Travel Center/Truck stop industry all his adult life. Starting out washing dishes and pumping diesel and gas, you could say he's come a long way. Asa said it like this: "I couldn't beat them, so I joined them." Proud to be a member of a "Winning Team," Asa agrees that if you keep focused, work hard, and have a passion for a job well done, you WILL succeed at Pilot Travel Centers.

Don Graham, Manager of Risk Management: Having been with Pilot nearly two decades, Don Graham has seen it change, grow, and prosper. Today, Don is the Corporate Risk Senior Manager; however, Don has held several other positions during his tenure, for example, Region Manager and Human Resources Manager. One key point that Don would like to share about Pilot is that Pilot rewards its employees who are dedicated, honest, and hard workers. Success is achievable at Pilot Travel Centers.

Kevin Stevens, Senior Region Manager: Kevin's reason for staying with Pilot is because he believes that Pilot employees are paid for their performance and results. There is no seniority, and those willing to work hard will achieve their career goals, both personally and financially. "You also have the ability to live almost anywhere," he says. Kevin feels that the "key to success" at Pilot is "if you're willing to uphold your part, Pilot will help you achieve your goals."

Rick Ellison, Divisional Director: "What I try to do every time I'm in one of my stores is to have an impact - to guide the Team toward ways they can improve their people, their customer service, and their financials. It's that drive for getting better results and the competitive nature of Pilot that makes it such an exciting place to work."

Matt Liggett, Regional Manager: Matt Liggett's career path with Pilot began in 1999 in restaurant management. Due to Matt's ambition and high work drive, along with Pilot's support through training and development, Matt was able to cross over from restaurant management into retail management. Starting as a Restaurant General Manager for an Arby's in Illinois, Matt later transitioned successfully to the position of General Manager in Training at a Travel Center in Ohio. Matt was excited not only for the promotion, but also for the opportunity to relocate to a preferred area. Matt is now a Region Manager over six Travel Centers and four Restaurant concepts. Matt is proud to be on the "Winning Team" at Pilot and has found it to be extremely challenging and fulfilling. "Pilot believes in establishing a career path and then providing the needed training and development for its management employees so that they can achieve their goals," stated Matt.
